My Personal Top 5:
1. Record World
2. Media Play
3. Sam Goody
4. Borders
5. FYE
- Michelle O'Connor Ohl Loved Book and Record!! The one in New Paltz was coolest, but there was one in the old Orange Plaza too
- Ronald Hart Jr I'm sure Larry Hanke would be interested to know that I bought my first Rush album, A Show of Hands, on vinyl at a Record World. The one that used to be in the Mid-Island Plaza/Broadway Mall in Hicksville where George Baselice used to work, in fact.
- Ronald Hart Jr Another memorable purchase was Naked by Talking Heads and Van Halen's OU812, two of my favorites to this day.
- Ronald Hart Jr It was The Wall, though I'm not sure what it was called before it became The Wall, which is now FYE.
- Ronald Hart Jr Book and Record was a good one, too, though no match for the mighty one-two punch of Rhino and Jack's Rhythms when they both came into town.
- Anne Marie Gucciardo The one in the Newburgh Mall was originally Listening Booth. Bought many a good vinyl there!
- Mark Rosen Spent many a lunch hour at Record World in Middletown. And Book and Record used to be the only game in town in NP for a while.
- Jason Buckley Record World in the South Hills Mall in Poughkeepsie, before the Galleria went up, before Media Play. Head straight for the "imports" section for the indie label stuff!
- Pamela Bosson Thompson Amoeba on Haight St in San Francisco was the coolest record store EVER, though it doesn't count as a mall store. Just thought I'd mention it anyway.
- Eric Strangfeld I am not sure what it was called but it was in the original Orange County Mall in Middletown downstairs. That Mall has since been torn down but you you could get any 45 record there you wanted, I believe my first purchase was Down Under by Men at Work.
- Ronald Hart Jr Strawberries in Newburgh was great, too. I got so many cool tapes there: PE's Fear of a Black Planet, Sonic Youth's Goo, Badlands' Voodoo Highway, Janes' Ritual, Slayer's Seasons in the Abyss, Robert Plant's Manic Nirvana...
- Ronald Hart Jr I was a big fan of that one record shop in the Orange Plaza as well, Eric. The Wiz in the Middletown Galleria was a good one, too...
- Ronald Hart Jr People knock FYE, but they have a sick used selection now since they are the only game in town in terms of franchsed national music chains. I've found some deep, deep treasures for cheap there...
- Jon Crawford Record World in the South Hills Mall, and in the lower level of the original Orange County Mall in Middletown (waaaay back).
- Wes Millsaps Rhino records. Only place locally you could find the punk or underground bands other wouldnt carry
- Russ Morey Listening Booth in the Newburgh Mall circa 1987 - 1989! Ok, I am a bit biased with my post because I worked there with Anthony Dostillio and Melissa Miller-Rider. It was a great era for new music. I remember Charlie Guido shopping there and numerous ot...See More
- Ronald Hart Jr The Sam Goody in the basement of the Roosevelt Field Mall in the 90s was really cool. I found some awesome stuff in their clearance section. Particularly this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1D-Ox1WB6NE
I just found a receipt from Listening Booth in Newburgh Mall from 1987. I bought a David Lee Roth "Yankee ROse" picture disc import.
